Three champions were crowned Saturday afternoon
in the $200,000 APA 8-Ball Classic.
In the blue tier (SL 2&3), it was Mike Davie of
New York defeating Jennifer Daigle of Denham Springs, La., 2-1. Davie
advanced to the Final Round with a victory over Sharon Degraff of Pinellas
Park, FL. Daigle advanced after defeating William Corbin of Mt. Pleasant,
S.C.
In the yellow tier (SL 4&5), Chris Kuk of New Lenow,
Ill., defeated Ricky Maddox of Bell City, Mo., 5-1. Kuk defeated Dexter
Gondo of Chicago to advance to the Finals, while Maddox advanced with
a win over Thomas Holden of Amite, La.
In the purple tier (SL6&7), Jeff Sergent of Joilet,
Ill., defeated Keith Svitanek of Palos Hills, Ill., 5-3. Sergent advanced
to the Final Round with a victory over Gord Baycroft of Bramela, Ont.,
Canada. Svitanek advanced after a win over Miguel Jackson of Grand Praire,
Tx.
Each champion received a prize package worth $15,000
in cash and prizes.
More than 27,000 amateur shooters attempted to
qualify for the 2002 APA 8-Ball Classic Singles Championship in their
local league area. A total of 3,951 poolplayers made it to the regional
level of the 8-Ball Classic before the field was whittled down to 264
men and women competing this weekend for 8-Ball crowns in each of the
three skill level tiers.
