Triple Play Finals

The Triple Play Pre-registered Championship event concluded on Saturday with Pool Junkies, Robert Hall, Bolaji Kukoyi, David Rowell, and Brian King of Meridianville, Ala., defeating the Main Street Billiards Topgun, Don Daley, Larry Phillips and Mike McGovern of Algonquin, Ill. The Pool Junkies took home a first place prize of $7,500; Main Street Billiards Topgun took home $2,700.

Both Robert Hall and David Rowell, of Pool Junkies, are former U.S. Amateur Champions. Rowell claimed U.S. Amateur Champion in 2000 and Hall in 2001.

The first match up was Larry Phillips and Robert Hall. Two equally talented players performed a see-saw match, after four games it was tied. Phillips came back into the lead with a break and run in the fifth game, but that wasn’t enough as Hall swept the final three games to claim a victory over Phillips.

The second match was Mike McGovern and Bolajl Kukoyi. McGovern had two victories before Kukoyi could catch up. Kukoyi claimed the third game, but McGovern fought back with two more wins, one a break and run. Kukoyi captured his own break and run but down two to four, Kukoyi couldn’t catch up and McGovern won the match.

Finally, David Rowell and Don Daley were up. This match went down to the last possible game. Rowell was down three to one, but captured the next two games to tie up with score. The final four games went back and forth, but Rowell captured it in the end.

Main Street Billiards Topgun defeated Three California Amigos, Ontario, Calif. to advance to the final round. Pool Junkies defeated Maine APA 1 of S. Portland, Maine in the semi-finals.

Participants in the Triple Play event can be any combination of men or women with no Skill Level limit. The event was a modified single elimination format; the maximum field for this event was 128 entries. Matches were an individual race-to-5, best two out of three for the match.
