Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, APA has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Junior Championships. The event had been scheduled for July 9-12 in St. Louis.
The four-day event is typically the highlight of the summer for up-and-coming poolplayers. Not only is it an opportunity to compete against other junior players on the pool table, but to build relationships with kids from across North America as well.
“We tried to wait as long as possible to make this decision, but it became clear to us we were not going to be comfortable bringing that many kids together, in close quarters, for this year’s event due to the pandemic,” said APA President Greg Fletcher.
The news will no doubt come as a disappointment to the more than 500 kids that had been expected to compete in this year’s event.
“We realize how disappointing this will be for many of our Junior players, and it’s a major disappointment for us as well, but we have to put the safety of the kids, parents and volunteers first,” added Fletcher.
The Junior Championships will return to St. Louis in 2021, and APA is very hopeful that the event will once again enjoy record-breaking participation.
