Bobby & Nika Harvison – Memphis, TN
How long were you members before deciding to become League Operators?
Before becoming League Operators, Bobby was an active APA member for 13 years. I was an active member for nine years. We both played on open teams, 8-Ball and 9-Ball Doubles, Ladies and Masters.
What made you decide to look into becoming League Operators?
We already owned other businesses and pool was our passion, so we decided it was time to combine the two!
Was the process of becoming League Operators difficult?
The process was not difficult at all. That being said, you do have to be serious about becoming a member of this great team in order for the process to run smoothly. The APA National Office staff was there for us every step of the way.
Briefly describe life as League Operators.
The life of a League Operator can be very rewarding, but it’s also a lot of work if you want to run your League effectively. A League Operator wears many hats—recruiter, salesperson, marketing specialist, tournament director, event coordinator, receptionist…and, sometimes even counselor/therapist. You have to be there for your League in a lot of different ways, and embrace that challenge!
What do you enjoy most about being League Operators?
The most rewarding aspect to us is the positive impact we have on others. If we do our jobs right, we get to experience this through our players, from the money we raise for charities, to sending the juniors to compete nationally, to the overwhelming emotions of our Memphis family when they help us make all this happen. We can’t do it without them. Memphis APA is our family!
What advice would you give to someone that is looking to become a League Operator?
If you’re seriously thinking of becoming a League Operator, as with any business, the work is twice as much as you think it will be, but the rewards are 10 times what you could ever imagine because you’re joining a family where everyone is pulling for you and helping you make your APA League the best it can be. We’ve owned other franchises and APA is the only one that truly feels like a family.
