Beginning with the 2027 Championship cycle, the APA Wheelchair Championship will transition to the APA 9-Ball format.
This update is designed to strengthen competitive balance and enhance the overall championship experience. After reviewing participation trends and feedback from the wheelchair player community, APA 9-Ball was identified as the format best suited to support meaningful competition and continued growth within the event.
APA 9-Ball promotes closer matches and keeps more players engaged throughout each match, creating a more dynamic and competitive championship environment—especially within a smaller, highly skilled field. The format also aligns with how many wheelchair players already compete today, as most are active in APA 9-Ball leagues.
The APA Equalizer® System will continue to function as intended. This update is not a replacement of 8-Ball, but a strategic choice to select the format that best fits the Wheelchair Championship.
The 2027 implementation timeline allows ample time for preparation and ensures a smooth, thoughtful transition. The Wheelchair Championship remains one of the APA’s most respected events, and this update is intended to keep it competitive, inclusive, and rewarding for all players.
Additional details regarding the updated format and eligibility will be shared as the 2027 Championship cycle approaches.
