After Central Virginia APA League Operator Dawn Buchanan’s mother passed away from cancer earlier in 2013, her family decided they wanted to raise money to support the cause. Dawn’s 11-year-old great niece and nephew, Destiny and Dakoda, came up with the idea to do a fundraiser during their Tri-Cup.

The Tri-Cup was held Oct. 18-20, 2013 at the Sandston Moose Lodge in Richmond, Va. Destiny and Dakoda made pink ribbons out of pool-related pins and pink ribbon, as well as bracelets, to be handed out to anyone who made a donation. Dawn and fellow League Operator, Marguerite Rueger, purchased some pink “APA Shoot for the Cure” sweatshirts and sold those as well, with the money being donated to the cause.

More than $1,300 was raised for the Susan G. Komen Foundation!

“With Marguerite also having lost her mother and sister to cancer, this cause is so near and dear to our hearts that we’re considering making this an annual ‘Go Pink During the Tri-Cup’ event, as our Tri-Cup is always held in October,” Dawn said. “Thank you to everyone who participated!”
