On Dec. 1, 2012, over 150 poolplayers, spectators and workers descended on Felt Billiards in Commack, N.Y., to help raise money for four different cancer charities—the Lustgarten Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Cancercare of NY and 1 in 9 Breast Care Coalition of Long Island.

The event, dubbed “Crush for a Cure”, featured teams of 5-8 people competing against each other in alternating 8-Ball and 9-Ball formats.

Play began at 8 pm with 8-Ball.  After the first hour, players moved tables, found new opponents and played a round of 9-Ball.  The format continued to alternate throughout the evening.  At the end of the night points were totaled and Team Crush, captained by Evan Broxmeyer, was crowned tournament champions.  Team FYC, captained by Carrie Metz, took 2nd Place.  Third Place went to Team Felt Mafia, captained by Deanna Dechant.  The “Most Fun to Play” team award went to Sal Abbate’s team from Dublin Jack.  The “Racking Champions” award (aka – last place) went to Team For Mankind, captained by Paul Forman who is currently fighting cancer.  The “Highest Bar Tab” award went to Katie Baker who is a cancer survivor.  The “Highest Fundraiser” award went to Evan Broxmeyer, who collected over $4,000.

Participants were treated to sandwiches and a beautiful 3-tiered cake made by Danielle Phillips.  The room was also decorated with luminary bags that included the names of survivors and in memory of those who lost their battle with cancer.

In addition to the tournament itself, money was raised through raffles, sponsorships and on-the-break contests.  A total of $12,795 was raised for the four charities.
