Thirty-nine ladies made their way to Strokers in Palm Harbor, Fla., to compete in the Women’s Division of this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship.

Four ladies finished the first day undefeated. That group included Amy Therianlt, Christi Steele, Melinda Huang and Jennifer Keeney.

Still alive in the one-loss bracket were Rhea Brooks, Lisa Cossette, Rachel Lang and Michelle Kass.

The major news of day 1 though was not about who was advancing, but instead, who would not be.

Defending champion Robin Parks went two-and out, suffering losses to Christi Steele and Sandy McConnell.

Her elimination, along with that of Betty Lea late Wednesday night, means we’ll be guaranteed a new champion in the Women’s Division of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
